Euler transform
Definition
Let be a sequence of real or complex numbers, and consider the alternating series . The forward difference is , and its iterates satisfy with the binomial coefficients . The Euler transform of the series is the series If converges, then its Euler transform converges to the same sum.
Remarks
Example: for one has , so the alternating harmonic series becomes , which equals . For the series diverges, but for and the transform is ; this is how Euler summation assigns the value to it. Non-example: for one gets , and the transform diverges, so the transform does not always produce a convergent series.
