Eulerian number
Builds on PermutationSymmetric group
Definition
Let be an integer and let be a permutation of . A descent of is an index with and . For an integer , the Eulerian number is the number of permutations of with exactly descents.
Remarks
Example: for , the permutations in one-line notation are , , , , and . Their numbers of descents are , so , and .
Non-example: the index is not a descent of , because . The descents of are only , so is counted by .
Other notations are and . The numbers satisfy and . They obey the recurrence . An explicit formula is Worpitzky's identity states that for .
