Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let a0,a1,…,ana_0, a_1, \dots, a_n be complex numbers such that no division by zero occurs on the right-hand side below. Then a0+a0a1+a0a1a2+⋯+a0a1⋯an=a01−a11+a1−a21+a2−⋯⋯+an−1−an1+an.a_0 + a_0 a_1 + a_0 a_1 a_2 + \cdots + a_0 a_1 \cdots a_n = \cfrac{a_0}{1 - \cfrac{a_1}{1 + a_1 - \cfrac{a_2}{1 + a_2 - \cfrac{\cdots}{\cdots + a_{n-1} - \cfrac{a_n}{1 + a_n}}}}}. Consequently, let (ak)(a_k) be an infinite sequence, and consider the infinite continued fraction of the same shape. Its nn-th convergent equals the nn-th partial sum of the series ∑k≥0a0a1⋯ak\sum_{k \ge 0} a_0 a_1 \cdots a_k. So the continued fraction converges exactly when the series does, and to the same value.

Remarks

Proof idea: by induction on nn. Replacing ana_n by an(1+an+1)a_n(1 + a_{n+1}) turns the left side for nn into the left side for n+1n + 1. On the right side the same replacement turns the last fraction an1+an\frac{a_n}{1 + a_n} into an1+an−an+11+an+1\frac{a_n}{1 + a_n - \frac{a_{n+1}}{1 + a_{n+1}}}, because both equal an(1+an+1)1+an+anan+1\frac{a_n(1 + a_{n+1})}{1 + a_n + a_n a_{n+1}}. Check for n=1n = 1: a01−a11+a1=a0(1+a1)\cfrac{a_0}{1 - \frac{a_1}{1 + a_1}} = a_0(1 + a_1). Example: with a0=1a_0 = 1 and ak=xa_k = x for k≥1k \ge 1, the series is the geometric series, and for ∣x∣<1\abs{x} < 1 11−x=11−x1+x−x1+x−⋯.\frac{1}{1 - x} = \cfrac{1}{1 - \cfrac{x}{1 + x - \cfrac{x}{1 + x - \cdots}}}.

For a student

Power series have this form with ak=ckx/ck−1a_k = c_k x / c_{k-1} when the coefficients ckc_k are nonzero. In this way the formula turns the series of exe^x, log⁡(1+x)\log(1 + x) or arctan⁡x\arctan x into continued fractions. These continued fractions converge at the same rate as the series; other transformations are needed to obtain faster convergence.
