Definition

Let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a finitely complete category and XX an object of π’ž\mathcal{C}. An internal equivalence relation on XX is a pair r1,r2 ⁣:Rβ†’Xr_1, r_2 \colon R \to X with this property. For every object TT, the set {(r1∘t,r2∘t):t ⁣:Tβ†’R}\set{(r_1 \circ t, r_2 \circ t) : t \colon T \to R} is an equivalence relation on the set π’ž(T,X)\mathcal{C}(T, X), and tt is determined by this pair. The relation is effective if it is the kernel pair of some morphism f ⁣:Xβ†’Yf \colon X \to Y. The category π’ž\mathcal{C} is exact in the sense of Barr if both conditions hold.

  1. π’ž\mathcal{C} is a regular category.
  2. Every internal equivalence relation in π’ž\mathcal{C} is effective.

Remarks

The second part of the first clause says that (r1,r2) ⁣:Rβ†’XΓ—X(r_1, r_2) \colon R \to X \times X is a monomorphism. The kernel pair of any morphism is always an internal equivalence relation, so clause 2 asks for the converse.

Example: the category of sets is Barr-exact. An equivalence relation RβŠ†XΓ—XR \subseteq X \times X is the kernel pair of the quotient map Xβ†’X/RX \to X / R.

Non-example: the category of torsion-free abelian groups. In β„€\Z, the subgroup R={(a,b):a≑b(mod2)}R = \set{(a, b) : a \equiv b \pmod 2} of β„€Γ—β„€\Z \times \Z is torsion-free and is an internal equivalence relation. Let f ⁣:β„€β†’Yf \colon \Z \to Y be a homomorphism into a torsion-free group with f(2)=0f(2) = 0. Then 2f(1)=02 f(1) = 0, so f(1)=0f(1) = 0 and the kernel pair of ff is all of β„€Γ—β„€\Z \times \Z. So RR is not effective and clause 2 fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
