Definition

Let RR be a Noetherian ring. A Noetherian ring AA is regular if A𝔮A_{\mathfrak{q}} is a regular local ring for every prime ideal 𝔮\mathfrak{q} of AA. An algebra AA over a field κ\kappa is geometrically regular if A⊗κLA \otimes_\kappa L is regular for every finite field extension LL of κ\kappa. The ring RR is excellent if:

  1. RR is universally catenary.
  2. RR is a G-ring: let 𝔭\mathfrak{p} be a prime ideal of RR and let R𝔭^\widehat{R_{\mathfrak{p}}} be the completion of the localization R𝔭R_{\mathfrak{p}}. Then for every prime ideal 𝔮\mathfrak{q} of R𝔭R_{\mathfrak{p}} with residue field κ(𝔮)\kappa(\mathfrak{q}), the ring R𝔭^⊗R𝔭κ(𝔮)\widehat{R_{\mathfrak{p}}} \otimes_{R_{\mathfrak{p}}} \kappa(\mathfrak{q}) is geometrically regular over κ(𝔮)\kappa(\mathfrak{q}).
  3. RR is J-2: let SS be a finitely generated RR-algebra. Then the set of prime ideals 𝔮\mathfrak{q} of SS with S𝔮S_{\mathfrak{q}} regular is open in the spectrum of SS with the Zariski topology.

Remarks

Example: every field kk is excellent. It is universally catenary because finitely generated kk-algebras are catenary. Clause 2 holds because the only prime of kk is 00, the ring kk is its own completion, and k⊗kk=kk \otimes_k k = k is geometrically regular over kk. The regular locus of a finitely generated kk-algebra is open, which is clause 3. More generally, ℤ\Z, every complete Noetherian local ring, and every Dedekind domain of characteristic 00 are excellent. Localizations and finitely generated algebras of excellent rings are excellent.

Non-example: there are Noetherian local domains whose completion has nonzero nilpotent elements. Such a ring fails clause 2, because if a reduced Noetherian local ring is a G-ring, then its completion is reduced.

Some authors call a ring that satisfies only clauses 2 and 3 quasi-excellent.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
