Exergy
Summary
The exergy of a system is the largest useful work that can be extracted from it. The extraction ends when the system is in equilibrium with a given environment. Unlike energy, exergy is not conserved: every irreversible process destroys some of it. Exergy analysis uses this to locate and measure the losses in power plants, engines and chemical processes.
