Definition
Let the environment be a large reservoir at fixed temperature and pressure . Let a closed system have internal energy , volume and entropy . The dead state is the state of thermodynamic equilibrium with the environment at and . Let , , be the values of these quantities in the dead state. The exergy of the system is It equals the maximum useful work that the system can deliver while it exchanges heat only with the environment and ends in the dead state. Useful work means the work beyond the work done against the environment pressure.
Remarks
Kinetic and potential energy of the system as a whole, when present, are added to in full. For a steady flow, the specific flow exergy is plus kinetic and potential terms, where is the specific enthalpy and the specific entropy.
Example: a body of constant heat capacity at temperature , with negligible volume change, has and . So with . Since for , the exergy is positive whenever , both for a hot and for a cold body.
Non-example: the internal energy alone is not the exergy. A system already in the dead state has although may be large, because no work can be extracted from it with that environment.
By the second law, , and in the dead state.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
