Internal energy

Summary

The internal energy of a thermodynamic system is the energy contained in it. It excludes the kinetic energy of the motion of the system as a whole and its potential energy in external fields. It is a state function, defined up to an additive constant. The first law of thermodynamics says that it changes by the heat absorbed plus the work done on the system.
