Isochoric process
Builds on Thermodynamic workHeatInternal energy
Definition
A process of a closed thermodynamic system is isochoric if the volume of the system is the same at all times of the process.
Remarks
If only pressure-volume work is possible, an isochoric process has . So the heat absorbed equals the change of internal energy: . For an ideal gas, an isochoric process satisfies constant, where is the thermodynamic temperature. Heating a gas in a cylinder with a free piston is not isochoric: the piston moves out and the volume grows.
