Statement

Let a fixed amount of nn moles of an ideal gas have heat capacities CpC_p at constant pressure and CVC_V at constant volume. Let RR be the molar gas constant. Then Cp−CV=nR.C_p - C_V = nR.

Remarks

For an ideal gas the internal energy UU depends only on the temperature TT, and pV=nRTpV = nRT. So the enthalpy H=U+pV=U(T)+nRTH = U + pV = U(T) + nRT also depends only on TT. Differentiating gives Cp=dH/dT=dU/dT+nR=CV+nRC_p = dH/dT = dU/dT + nR = C_V + nR. For a monatomic ideal gas, CV=32nRC_V = \tfrac{3}{2} nR and Cp=52nRC_p = \tfrac{5}{2} nR, and their difference is nRnR. For an arbitrary simple system the general identity is Cp−CV=TVα2/κTC_p - C_V = T V \alpha^2 / \kappa_T. Here α\alpha is the thermal expansion coefficient and κT\kappa_T the isothermal compressibility. For an ideal gas α=1/T\alpha = 1/T and κT=1/p\kappa_T = 1/p, which gives back nRnR. The relation fails for real gases, where UU depends also on the volume.

Going deeper

For a student

The relation is the first place where the two heat capacities are compared, and it uses both the equation of state and the fact that UU depends only on TT. Together with the heat capacity ratio γ=Cp/CV\gamma = C_p / C_V it gives CV=nR/(γ−1)C_V = nR/(\gamma - 1) and Cp=γnR/(γ−1)C_p = \gamma nR/(\gamma - 1). Historically it allowed Mayer to estimate the mechanical equivalent of heat from gas data. The general form Cp−CV=TVα2/κTC_p - C_V = TV\alpha^2/\kappa_T is derived from the Maxwell relations and shows Cp≥CVC_p \ge C_V for every stable system.
