Definition
Let be a closed thermodynamic system enclosed by adiabatic walls, which let no heat through. Assume the following postulate. For any two equilibrium states and , one of them can be reached from the other by a process in these walls. The work done on is the same for every such process. Write for this work. The internal energy is the state function with .
Remarks
If only can be reached from , set . The postulate determines up to an additive constant, fixed by choosing at one reference state. For moles of a monatomic ideal gas at thermodynamic temperature , , where is the gas constant. A ball of gas thrown through the air has extra kinetic energy as a whole. That bulk kinetic energy is not part of , since it does not depend on the thermodynamic state.
