Definition

Let the state xx of a closed system lie in a state space, here an open subset of ℝn\R^n. Let E(x)E(x) be its total energy and S(x)S(x) its entropy, smooth functions with gradients ∇E\nabla E and ∇S\nabla S. An evolution equation is in GENERIC form if it reads dxdt=L(x) ∇E(x)+M(x) ∇S(x),\frac{dx}{dt} = L(x)\,\nabla E(x) + M(x)\,\nabla S(x), where L(x)L(x) and M(x)M(x) are n×nn \times n matrices with these properties.

  1. L(x)L(x) is skew-symmetric, and {A,B}=∇ATL∇B\set{A, B} = \nabla A^T L \nabla B satisfies the Jacobi identity, so it is a Poisson bracket.
  2. M(x)M(x) is symmetric and positive semidefinite.
  3. L(x) ∇S(x)=0L(x)\,\nabla S(x) = 0 for all xx.
  4. M(x) ∇E(x)=0M(x)\,\nabla E(x) = 0 for all xx.

Remarks

These conditions give dE/dt=∇ETL∇E+∇ETM∇S=0dE/dt = \nabla E^T L \nabla E + \nabla E^T M \nabla S = 0 and dS/dt=∇STL∇E+∇STM∇S≥0dS/dt = \nabla S^T L \nabla E + \nabla S^T M \nabla S \ge 0. Example: a particle of mass mm in a potential VV with friction coefficient γ>0\gamma > 0, whose lost energy becomes internal energy ee of a medium with entropy S(e)S(e) and temperature T(e)=1/S′(e)>0T(e) = 1/S'(e) > 0. Take x=(q,p,e)x = (q, p, e), E=p2/(2m)+V(q)+eE = p^2/(2m) + V(q) + e, LL the canonical skew matrix on (q,p)(q, p) and zero on ee, and M=γT wwTM = \gamma T\, w w^T with w=(0,1,−p/m)w = (0, 1, -p/m). Then L∇S=0L \nabla S = 0 and wT∇E=p/m−p/m=0w^T \nabla E = p/m - p/m = 0, so clauses 1 to 4 hold, and the equations are q˙=p/m\dot q = p/m, p˙=−V′(q)−γp/m\dot p = -V'(q) - \gamma p/m, e˙=γp2/m2\dot e = \gamma p^2/m^2. Non-example: the same system with M=γTdiag⁡(0,1,0)M = \gamma T \operatorname{diag}(0, 1, 0) fails clause 4, since M∇E=(0,γTp/m,0)≠0M \nabla E = (0, \gamma T p/m, 0) \ne 0 when p≠0p \ne 0. In infinite dimensions, as for fluids, the gradients become functional derivatives and LL, MM become operators.
