Total derivative
Summary
Let map an open subset of to . The total derivative of at a point is the linear map that best approximates near . That is, as . It is the Fréchet derivative in the case of Euclidean spaces. Its matrix in the standard bases is the Jacobian matrix of at .
Remarks
The total derivative accounts for changes in all variables at once. A partial derivative accounts for a change in one variable only. When depends on both directly and through other functions of , the total derivative is the sum , by the chain rule.
Explanations
L1 human
For a function of one variable, the derivative at a point is a number: the slope of the tangent line. For a function of several variables, the derivative at a point is a linear map: it tells how the output changes for each small step in any direction.
What this node needs for W2
- edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
- edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
- edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
- edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
