Definition
Let a thermodynamic system in equilibrium have internal energy , thermodynamic temperature and entropy . Its Helmholtz free energy is the state function
Remarks
The notation is also common. From one gets , where is the pressure and the volume. So the natural variables of are and , and , . Example: for an ideal gas of moles, for some function , and indeed . Non-example: is not the Helmholtz free energy; the product must be of the conjugate pair and , and has no thermodynamic meaning.
