Definition
Let a continuous system occupy a region during a time interval . The system is in local thermodynamic equilibrium if these conditions hold.
- Around each point there are cells that are small against the lengths over which macroscopic quantities vary. Yet they contain enough particles for thermodynamics to apply.
- At each time , each cell has the variables of an equilibrium state. These are the specific internal energy , specific volume and mass fractions . They also include the intensive variables: temperature , pressure and chemical potentials .
- These fields obey the equilibrium equations of state. The specific entropy obeys the fundamental relation in the Gibbs form along the motion of each material element.
Remarks
Example: heat conduction in a copper bar with ends at kelvin and kelvin. The temperature changes over centimetres, while a cell of side holds about atoms, so clauses 1 to 3 hold to high accuracy. Non-example: a shock wave in a dilute gas, a few mean free paths thick, fails clause 1. No cell is both small against the shock and large against the mean free path. Here is the chemical potential per unit mass of component .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
