Example
Take moles of an ideal gas with constant heat capacity ratio , and two reservoirs at temperatures . The Carnot cycle consists of four reversible steps, through volumes and :
- isothermal expansion at from to , absorbing heat ;
- isentropic expansion from to , during which the gas cools from to ;
- isothermal compression at from to , rejecting heat ;
- isentropic compression from back to , during which the gas warms from to .
Check that it is a thermodynamic cycle and compute its efficiency. The gas ends at volume and temperature , its initial state. On an isentrope of an ideal gas, is constant, so and . Dividing gives . The two isentropic steps exchange no heat. On an isotherm of an ideal gas the internal energy is constant, so the heat equals the work ; this gives and . Hence the thermal efficiency is the largest value allowed by Carnot's theorem. For and , .
