Definition
Consider a closed simple system with entropy , volume , temperature and pressure . The thermodynamic square is the square diagram with these labels:
- Corners: at the top left, at the top right, at the bottom right, at the bottom left.
- Sides: internal energy on top, Helmholtz free energy right, Gibbs free energy bottom, enthalpy left.
It is read with this rule. For a potential on a side, its natural variables are the two adjacent corners, taken without sign. For such a variable , let be the label, with its sign, at the corner diagonally opposite to . The differential of the potential is the sum of over its two natural variables .
Remarks
Example: lies between and . The corner opposite is , and the corner opposite is , so , which agrees with the fundamental relation. In the same way the square gives , and , where is the entropy. Non-example: a square with and swapped is not the thermodynamic square, since its rule would give , which is false. The Maxwell relations can also be read off from the corners of the square.
