Partial derivative
Definition
Let be an open set, let , let , and let . Let be the -th standard basis vector of Euclidean space . The partial derivative of with respect to at is the limit when this limit exists in . Other notations for it are , and .
Remarks
The partial derivative is the ordinary derivative at of the function of one variable. So you compute it with the rules of one-variable calculus, and you treat the other variables as constants. It is the directional derivative in the direction . The existence of all partial derivatives at does not imply that is continuous at , see this counterexample.
Explanations
L1 human
To find , pretend that is a fixed number and differentiate in as usual. For , this gives , because is a constant for this purpose. Geometrically, it is the slope of the graph of when you walk in the -direction.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
