Curl
Definition
Let be open, and let be a vector field whose first partial derivatives exist on . The curl of is the vector field , A field with on is irrotational, or curl-free.
Remarks
As a mnemonic, is the formal determinant of the matrix with rows , and . For , . For , . For a plane field , one uses the scalar curl , the third component of the curl of . It appears in Green's theorem. Take small loops orthogonal to a unit vector . The component of along is the limit of the circulation of around these loops, divided by the enclosed area. This follows from Stokes' theorem.
Explanations
L1 human
Put a tiny paddle wheel into a fluid with velocity field . If it spins, the curl is not zero there. The curl points along the axis about which the wheel spins fastest.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
