Vector-valued function

Summary

A vector-valued function is a function whose values are vectors, for example f ⁣:D→Rmf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}^m with D⊆RnD \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n and m≥2m \ge 2. Such a function has mm component functions f1,…,fm ⁣:D→Rf_1, \dots, f_m \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, with f(x)=(f1(x),…,fm(x))f(x) = (f_1(x), \dots, f_m(x)) for each x∈Dx \in D. An example is r(t)=(cos⁡t,sin⁡t,t)r(t) = (\cos t, \sin t, t) for t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, whose values trace a helix in the Euclidean space R3\mathbb{R}^3.

Remarks

Limits, continuity and derivatives of a vector-valued function into Rm\mathbb{R}^m can be computed one component at a time. When the domain is an interval of R\mathbb{R}, the function is a parametrised curve.

Explanations

L1 human

A vector-valued function gives an arrow, or a point, for each input, not a single number. If tt is time, then r(t)r(t) can be the position of a moving particle in space.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
