Tangent plane and normal vector of a surface
Definition
Let be a parametrised surface that is regular at the point of , and let . The tangent plane at is the plane . The vector is the normal vector of at , and is the unit normal vector.
Remarks
The vector is perpendicular to and , so it is perpendicular to the tangent plane. The other unit normal at is . For the graph , the normal is , which points upward. If the surface is the level set of a function with , then the gradient is a normal vector at . For the unit sphere with , one gets , which points outward for .
Explanations
L1 human
The tangent plane is the flat plane that touches the surface at a point, and the normal vector sticks straight out of it. The cross product of the two coordinate tangent vectors gives a normal at once.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
