Differentiable on an open set

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be an open set and let f ⁣:U→Rmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m. The function ff is differentiable on UU when it is differentiable at each point a∈Ua \in U. Then the derivative of ff is the map Df ⁣:U→L(Rn,Rm)Df \colon U \to L(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m), a↦Df(a)a \mapsto Df(a), where L(Rn,Rm)L(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m) is the space of linear maps from Rn\mathbb{R}^n to Rm\mathbb{R}^m.

Remarks

The function ff is continuously differentiable, or of class C1C^1, on UU when it is differentiable on UU and DfDf is continuous. Here L(Rn,Rm)L(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m) carries the topology of m×nm \times n matrices. For a set SS that is not open, one uses derivatives within SS instead. On an open set the two notions agree. Each polynomial map Rn→Rm\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m is differentiable on Rn\mathbb{R}^n.

Explanations

L1 human

Differentiable on UU means that there is a good linear approximation at each point of UU, not only at one point. The approximation changes from point to point, so the derivative is itself a function on UU.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  3. Function of several variables concept
  4. Limit of a function of several variables concept
  5. Differentiable function of several variables definition
  6. Differentiable on an open set definition

What depends on this

73 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
