Conservative vector field

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, and let F ⁣:U→RnF \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^n be a continuous vector field. The field FF is conservative on UU if there is a function ϕ ⁣:U→R\phi \colon U \to \mathbb{R} of class C^1 with F=∇ϕF = \nabla \phi on UU, that is, Fi=∂ϕ/∂xiF_i = \partial \phi / \partial x_i for i=1,…,ni = 1, \dots, n.

Remarks

A function ϕ\phi with ∇ϕ=F\nabla \phi = F is a scalar potential of FF. Physics texts often use −ϕ-\phi instead. The field F(x,y)=(2xy,x2)F(x, y) = (2 x y, x^2) is conservative on R2\mathbb{R}^2, with ϕ(x,y)=x2y\phi(x, y) = x^2 y. The field F(x,y)=(−y,x)F(x, y) = (-y, x) is not conservative on R2\mathbb{R}^2. Its line integral around the unit circle is 2π≠02\pi \ne 0, which contradicts path independence. If FF is conservative and of class C1C^1, then its curl is zero. The converse holds on convex sets but fails in general.

Explanations

L1 human

A conservative field is the slope field of some landscape ϕ\phi. Going around a loop in a landscape brings you back to the same height. So the total work of the field around the loop is zero.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 17 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
