Vector field

Definition

Let S⊆RnS \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n. A vector field on SS is a vector-valued function F ⁣:S→RnF \colon S \to \mathbb{R}^n, F(x)=(F1(x),…,Fn(x))F(x) = (F_1(x), \dots, F_n(x)). The vector field is continuous, or of class CkC^k, if each component FiF_i is continuous, or of class C^k, on SS.

Remarks

One pictures FF by an arrow F(x)F(x) drawn with its tail at the point xx. For a differentiable function f ⁣:U→Rf \colon U \to \mathbb{R} on an open set UU, the gradient ∇f\nabla f is a vector field on UU. Such fields are gradient fields. The field F(x,y)=(−y,x)F(x, y) = (-y, x) on R2\mathbb{R}^2 describes a counterclockwise rotation about the origin. The field F(x)=xF(x) = x points away from the origin. In R3\mathbb{R}^3 one often writes F=P i+Q j+R kF = P \, \mathbf{i} + Q \, \mathbf{j} + R \, \mathbf{k}, with PP, QQ, RR the components of FF.

Explanations

L1 human

A vector field attaches an arrow to each point. Think of the wind on a weather map: at each place there is a wind direction and a wind speed.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
