statement proposition

C^k function characterised by continuous derivatives

Statement

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, let f ⁣:U→Rmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m, and let k≥1k \ge 1 be an integer. Say that ff is of class CkC^k on UU when the following is true for each component fjf_j and each r≤kr \le k. Each partial derivative ∂rfj/∂xir⋯∂xi1\partial^r f_j / \partial x_{i_r} \cdots \partial x_{i_1} of order rr exists on UU and is continuous on UU. Then ff is of class CkC^k on UU if and only if these two conditions hold.

  1. For each rr with 0≤r≤k0 \le r \le k, the iterated derivative DrfD^r f exists on UU and is continuous on UU.
  2. For each rr with 0≤r<k0 \le r < k, the map DrfD^r f is differentiable on UU.

Remarks

So in finite dimensions, CkC^k means kk times continuously differentiable, in either the sense of partial derivatives or the sense of Fréchet derivatives. A function is of class C∞C^\infty, or smooth, when it is of class CkC^k for each kk. Each polynomial in x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n is of class C∞C^\infty on Rn\mathbb{R}^n. The function x↦∥x∥x \mapsto \|x\| is of class C∞C^\infty on Rn∖{0}\mathbb{R}^n \setminus \{0\}, but it is not differentiable at 00.

Explanations

L1 human

There are two ways to count derivatives: one variable at a time with partial derivatives, or all variables at once with total derivatives. For functions on open subsets of Rn\mathbb{R}^n, both ways give the same classes C1,C2,…C^1, C^2, \dots, as long as you also ask for continuity.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
