Implicit differentiation
Summary
Implicit differentiation finds the derivative of a function that an equation defines, without solving the equation for . One differentiates both sides of with the chain rule and solves the result for .
Remarks
If is of class and at the point, then , evaluated at . The implicit function theorem guarantees that exists and is differentiable. For the circle , differentiation gives . So at each point with , on both the upper and the lower arc. With several variables, gives and where . Here , , are the partial derivatives of .
Explanations
L1 human
Sometimes a curve is given by an equation and not by a formula . You can still find its slope: treat as a function of , differentiate the equation term by term, and solve for .
