Rectifiable curve

Definition

Let γ ⁣:[a,b]→Rn\gamma \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}^n be a parametrised curve. For a partition PP given by a=t0<t1<⋯<tk=ba = t_0 < t_1 < \dots < t_k = b, let L(γ,P)=∑i=1k∥γ(ti)−γ(ti−1)∥L(\gamma, P) = \sum_{i = 1}^{k} \|\gamma(t_i) - \gamma(t_{i-1})\| be the length of the inscribed polygonal path. The curve γ\gamma is rectifiable if sup⁡PL(γ,P)<∞\sup_P L(\gamma, P) < \infty, where the supremum is over all partitions of [a,b][a, b]. Then the length of γ\gamma is ℓ(γ)=sup⁡PL(γ,P)\ell(\gamma) = \sup_P L(\gamma, P).

Remarks

If γ\gamma is of class C1C^1, then it is rectifiable and ℓ(γ)=∫ab∥γ′(t)∥ dt\ell(\gamma) = \int_a^b \|\gamma'(t)\| \, dt. A refinement of PP does not decrease L(γ,P)L(\gamma, P), by the triangle inequality. The graph of f(x)=xsin⁡(1/x)f(x) = x \sin(1/x) for 0<x≤10 < x \le 1, f(0)=0f(0) = 0, is a continuous curve that is not rectifiable. The Koch curve is another example. A curve is rectifiable if and only if each component γi\gamma_i has bounded variation on [a,b][a, b].

Explanations

L1 human

Approximate the curve by a chain of straight segments between points on it, and add up their lengths. Finer chains give longer totals. If the totals stay bounded, the curve has a finite length, and the length is their least upper bound.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
