Line integral of a scalar field

Definition

Let γ ⁣:[a,b]→Rn\gamma \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}^n be a rectifiable curve with image CC, and let f ⁣:C→Rf \colon C \to \mathbb{R} be continuous. For a partition a=t0<t1<⋯<tk=ba = t_0 < t_1 < \dots < t_k = b and points τi∈[ti−1,ti]\tau_i \in [t_{i-1}, t_i], let Δsi\Delta s_i be the length of the restriction of γ\gamma to [ti−1,ti][t_{i-1}, t_i]. The line integral of ff along γ\gamma is the limit ∫γf ds=lim⁡∑i=1kf(γ(τi)) Δsi,\int_\gamma f \, ds = \lim \sum_{i=1}^{k} f(\gamma(\tau_i)) \, \Delta s_i, taken as max⁡i(ti−ti−1)→0\max_i (t_i - t_{i-1}) \to 0.

Remarks

The limit exists, and it does not depend on the choice of the points τi\tau_i. For a C1C^1 curve, ∫γf ds=∫abf(γ(t)) ∥γ′(t)∥ dt\int_\gamma f \, ds = \int_a^b f(\gamma(t)) \, \|\gamma'(t)\| \, dt. This is the parametric formula. For f=1f = 1 the line integral is the length of γ\gamma. If γ\gamma is a wire with linear density ff, the line integral is its mass. The value does not change under a reparametrisation of γ\gamma, in either direction.

Explanations

L1 human

Walk along the curve, and at each small step multiply the length of the step by the value of ff there. The sum of these products, in the limit of small steps, is the line integral with respect to arc length.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
