Iterated derivative

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open and let f ⁣:U→Rmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m. For an integer k≥0k \ge 0, let Lk(Rn;Rm)L^k(\mathbb{R}^n; \mathbb{R}^m) be the space of kk-linear maps from (Rn)k(\mathbb{R}^n)^k to Rm\mathbb{R}^m, with L0(Rn;Rm)=RmL^0(\mathbb{R}^n; \mathbb{R}^m) = \mathbb{R}^m. The iterated derivatives are defined by recursion. First, D0f=fD^0 f = f. Suppose that Dkf ⁣:U→Lk(Rn;Rm)D^k f \colon U \to L^k(\mathbb{R}^n; \mathbb{R}^m) is defined on UU and is differentiable on U. Then Dk+1f(a)D^{k+1} f(a), for a∈Ua \in U, is the (k+1)(k+1)-linear map Dk+1f(a)(v1,v2,…,vk+1)=(D(Dkf)(a)(v1))(v2,…,vk+1).D^{k+1} f(a)(v_1, v_2, \dots, v_{k+1}) = \big(D(D^k f)(a)(v_1)\big)(v_2, \dots, v_{k+1}). Here D(Dkf)(a)D(D^k f)(a) is the Fréchet derivative of DkfD^k f at aa, a linear map from Rn\mathbb{R}^n to Lk(Rn;Rm)L^k(\mathbb{R}^n; \mathbb{R}^m).

Remarks

For k=1k = 1, D1f=DfD^1 f = Df. For k=2k = 2, D2f(a)(u,v)D^2 f(a)(u, v) is the derivative of x↦Df(x)(v)x \mapsto Df(x)(v) at aa in the direction uu. On basis vectors, D2f(a)(ei,ej)=∂∂xi(∂f∂xj)(a)D^2 f(a)(e_i, e_j) = \dfrac{\partial}{\partial x_i}\left(\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x_j}\right)(a). In general, Dkf(a)(ei1,…,eik)D^k f(a)(e_{i_1}, \dots, e_{i_k}) is a partial derivative of order k. For a real-valued ff, the matrix of the bilinear map D2f(a)D^2 f(a) is the Hessian matrix. If ff is of class CkC^k, then Dkf(a)D^k f(a) is a symmetric kk-linear map, by the symmetry of second derivatives.

Explanations

L1 human

The first derivative takes one direction and gives a rate of change. The second derivative takes two directions uu and vv. It tells how the rate of change in direction vv itself changes as you move in direction uu.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
