Laplacian
Definition
Let be open, and let be twice differentiable on . The Laplacian of is the function , the divergence of the gradient of . It is also written .
Remarks
In Cartesian coordinates, is the sum of the unmixed second partial derivatives of . The operator is linear, and it maps functions of class C^k to functions of class for . Let be of class , and let be the average of on the sphere of radius about . Then is times the limit of as . So means that is below its nearby averages. The Laplacian appears in the heat equation , the wave equation and Laplace's equation .
Explanations
L1 human
The Laplacian compares the value of a function at a point with its values nearby. If at the point is lower than the average around it, the Laplacian is positive. If it is higher, the Laplacian is negative.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
