Gradient
Definition
Let be open, let , and let be a point at which is differentiable. The gradient of at is the unique vector such that where is the dot product of Euclidean space. In coordinates, it is the vector of partial derivatives Other notations are and , where is the del operator.
Remarks
The vector exists and is unique because each linear map is for exactly one . For , the gradient is . A gradient is a column vector, and the derivative is the row vector of the same entries. Some books do not make this distinction. The map is a vector field on , the gradient field of .
Explanations
L1 human
The gradient collects all slopes of along the axes into one arrow. On a map of a hill, the gradient at a point is an arrow that points straight uphill. The arrow is longer where the hill is steeper.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
