Fréchet derivative
Definition
Let and be normed vector spaces over , let be an open set, let , and let . A bounded linear map is a Fréchet derivative of at when The limit is over with . When such an exists, is Fréchet differentiable at , with the notation or .
Remarks
The Fréchet derivative is unique when it exists, see the uniqueness of the derivative. For , a linear map is multiplication by a number . Then the condition says that has the derivative at in the usual sense. For and , each linear map is bounded, and is the total derivative of at . Its matrix is the Jacobian matrix. If is Fréchet differentiable at , then is continuous at .
Explanations
L1 human
Near , the change is close to , a linear function of the step . The error is small even compared with the length of the step, when the step is short. So plays the role of the slope of a tangent line, but now the tangent object is a linear map.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
