statement proposition

Product rule in several variables

Statement

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, let f,g ⁣:U→Rf, g \colon U \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Ua \in U. Suppose that ff and gg are differentiable at aa. Then the product fgf g is differentiable at aa, and its derivative is D(fg)(a)=f(a) Dg(a)+g(a) Df(a).D(f g)(a) = f(a) \, Dg(a) + g(a) \, Df(a). That is, D(fg)(a)(h)=f(a) Dg(a)(h)+g(a) Df(a)(h)D(f g)(a)(h) = f(a) \, Dg(a)(h) + g(a) \, Df(a)(h) for each h∈Rnh \in \mathbb{R}^n.

Remarks

In terms of the gradient, the rule reads ∇(fg)=f∇g+g∇f\nabla (f g) = f \nabla g + g \nabla f. The same rule holds for each partial derivative: ∂i(fg)=f ∂ig+g ∂if\partial_i (f g) = f \, \partial_i g + g \, \partial_i f. More generally, let BB be a bounded bilinear map. If ff and gg are Fréchet differentiable at aa, then D(B(f,g))(a)(h)=B(Df(a)h,g(a))+B(f(a),Dg(a)h)D(B(f, g))(a)(h) = B(Df(a) h, g(a)) + B(f(a), Dg(a) h). This gives product rules for the dot product and the cross product.

Explanations

L1 human

This is the familiar rule (fg)′=f′g+fg′(f g)' = f' g + f g', applied to the change in each direction at once. For f=xf = x and g=yg = y on R2\mathbb{R}^2, the product xyx y has the derivative h↦yh1+xh2h \mapsto y h_1 + x h_2 at the point (x,y)(x, y).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
