Statement
Let a closed simple system have temperature , entropy , pressure and volume . Suppose that its internal energy , enthalpy , Helmholtz free energy and Gibbs free energy are twice continuously differentiable in their natural variables. Then the partial derivatives satisfy
- ,
- ,
- ,
- .
A subscript names the variable held fixed.
Remarks
The fundamental relation gives , , and . So, for instance, and . Each relation is the equality of mixed second derivatives of one potential: relation 1 for , 2 for , 3 for and 4 for . Example: for an ideal gas, , so relation 3 gives . Integrating, an isothermal expansion from to raises the entropy by .
Going deeper
For a student
The relations turn derivatives of the entropy, which cannot be measured directly, into derivatives of , and , which can. With them one derives, for example, the difference of the heat capacities, where is the thermal expansion coefficient and the isothermal compressibility. For systems with more variables, such as magnetic systems or open systems, each potential gives further Maxwell relations in the same way.
