Thermodynamic potential
Summary
A thermodynamic potential is a state function that contains all the equilibrium information about a system. This holds when it is written in terms of its natural variables. The internal energy as a function of entropy, volume and amounts of substance is the basic one. The others, such as the enthalpy and the Helmholtz and Gibbs free energies, are its Legendre transforms in some of these variables. Each potential is suited to a set of experimental conditions, and it is minimal in equilibrium under those conditions.
