Grand potential
Summary
The grand potential, or Landau free energy, is the thermodynamic potential of an open system whose natural variables are temperature, volume and chemical potential. It equals the Helmholtz free energy minus the product of chemical potential and number of particles. It is minimal in equilibrium for a system in contact with a reservoir of heat and particles. In statistical mechanics it is times the logarithm of the grand canonical partition function.
