Definition
Let a closed system with entropy exchange heat with its surroundings through boundary parts at temperatures , at rates . Split the rate of change of entropy as The first term is the entropy exchange rate, and is the rate of entropy production of the system.
Now let a continuous system be in local thermodynamic equilibrium, with mass density and specific entropy . The local form is the balance law Here is the material derivative, is the entropy flux and is the divergence. The term is the local entropy production per unit volume and time.
Remarks
The second law states and , with equality exactly for reversible processes. Example: in a solid with heat flux and no other process, and With Fourier's law and , this gives , as the second law requires. In general , a sum of products of fluxes and conjugate forces , such as for heat or for diffusion. Non-example: the full rate is not the entropy production, because it also contains the exchange term, and it can be negative when a body cools.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
