Definition

Let Σ\Sigma be a closed thermodynamic system with internal energy UU. Let a process take Σ\Sigma from the equilibrium state AA to the equilibrium state BB. Let WW be the work done on Σ\Sigma in this process. The heat absorbed by Σ\Sigma in the process is Q=U(B)−U(A)−W.Q = U(B) - U(A) - W.

Remarks

Heat a gas in a rigid closed container, so that no work is done and W=0W = 0. Then the heat absorbed is Q=U(B)−U(A)Q = U(B) - U(A), the rise of internal energy. Stirring a liquid in an insulated vessel raises its internal energy, but the heat absorbed is 00. All of the energy then enters as work, so W=U(B)−U(A)W = U(B) - U(A). With this definition, ΔU=Q+W\Delta U = Q + W is the first law of thermodynamics. Many engineering texts use the work W′=−WW' = -W done by the system and write ΔU=Q−W′\Delta U = Q - W'.
