definition

Exponent of a group

Definition

Let GG be a group. The exponent of GG is the least positive integer nn such that gn=eg^n = e for each g∈Gg \in G. If no such integer exists, then GG has infinite exponent.

Remarks

When the exponent is finite, it is the least common multiple of the orders of the elements of GG. The exponent of a finite group divides the order of the group, by Lagrange's theorem. The exponent of the cyclic group of order nn is nn, and the exponent of the Klein four-group is 22. The exponent of (Z/nZ)×(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^\times is the Carmichael function λ(n)\lambda(n).

Explanations

L1 human

The exponent is the smallest power that sends every element to the identity. It is a common multiple of all the element orders. A finite group always has a finite exponent, and the exponent divides the order.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Group concept
  2. Laws of exponents in a group statement
  3. Order of an element definition
  4. Exponent of a group definition

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
