Exponential sum

Builds on Complex exponential

Definition

For a real number xx, write e(x)=e2πixe(x) = e^{2\pi i x}, where eze^{z} is the complex exponential. Let AA be a finite set of integers, and let f ⁣:A→ℝf \colon A \to \R be a function. The exponential sum of ff over AA is the complex number S=∑n∈Ae(f(n)).S = \sum_{n \in A} e(f(n)). Most often AA is an interval {n∈ℤ:M<n≤M+N}\set{n \in \Z : M < n \le M + N}.

Remarks

Each term has absolute value 11, so ∣S∣≤#A\abs{S} \le \#A; this is the trivial bound. Example: for f(n)=nαf(n) = n\alpha with α∈ℝ∖ℤ\alpha \in \R \setminus \Z and A={1,…,N}A = \set{1, \dots, N}, the sum is geometric and ∣S∣=∣e(Nα)−1e(α)−1∣≤1∣sin⁡πα∣,\abs{S} = \abs{\frac{e(N\alpha) - 1}{e(\alpha) - 1}} \le \frac{1}{\abs{\sin \pi \alpha}}, a bound independent of NN. Non-example: ∑n=1N2n\sum_{n=1}^{N} 2^n is a sum of values of an exponential function, but it is not an exponential sum in this sense. Its terms have absolute value larger than 11, so they are not of the form e(f(n))e(f(n)) with ff real. When ff is a polynomial, SS is called a Weyl sum. Sums with weights, ∑n∈Aane(f(n))\sum_{n \in A} a_n e(f(n)) with complex ana_n, are also called exponential sums.
