Ext functor
Builds on RingModule over a ringProjective resolutionProjective module
Definition
Let be a ring and let and be -modules. Choose a projective resolution of . Applying to gives a cochain complex where . For , the -th Ext group is its cohomology with .
Remarks
Up to a canonical isomorphism, does not depend on the choice of the resolution. One has , and the same groups are obtained from an injective resolution of . If is commutative, the Ext groups are -modules. Example: from with , the complex is , so and . Non-example: the sequence is exact but is not projective over for ; using it would give , which is wrong. A module is projective if and only if for all -modules .
