Extended Euclidean algorithm

Summary

The extended Euclidean algorithm computes the greatest common divisor dd of two integers aa and bb, and also integers xx and yy such that ax+by=da x + b y = d. It does the steps of the Euclidean algorithm. At each step, it writes the new remainder as an integer combination of aa and bb.

Remarks

The coefficients xx and yy prove Bézout's identity for aa and bb. When gcd⁡(a,n)=1\gcd(a, n) = 1, the coefficient xx of aa is a modular multiplicative inverse of aa modulo nn.

Explanations

For a=48a = 48 and b=18b = 18, the Euclidean algorithm gives 12=48−2⋅1812 = 48 - 2 \cdot 18 and 6=18−1⋅126 = 18 - 1 \cdot 12. Put the first equation into the second: 6=18−(48−2⋅18)=3⋅18−1⋅486 = 18 - (48 - 2 \cdot 18) = 3 \cdot 18 - 1 \cdot 48. So x=−1x = -1 and y=3y = 3 give 48x+18y=648 x + 18 y = 6.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
