Builds on Vector spaceConvex set
Definition
Let be a vector space over or , and let be a convex set. A point is an extreme point of if, whenever with and , one has . The set of extreme points of is written .
Remarks
In , let . The corner is extreme: if with and , then each coordinate is a combination of nonnegative numbers with positive weights equal to , so . The point is not extreme, because it is the midpoint of and , which lie in and differ from it. Equivalently, is extreme when is not the midpoint of two distinct points of . An open ball in a nonzero normed space has no extreme points. The closed unit ball of the sequence space also has no extreme points.
