F-coalgebra
Builds on Functor
Definition
Let be a category and let be a functor. An -coalgebra is a pair of an object of and a morphism . A homomorphism of -coalgebras is a morphism with .
Remarks
The -coalgebras and their homomorphisms form a category. An -coalgebra is the same as an algebra for the functor on .
Example: on the category of sets let , so . The map with makes an -coalgebra. The set of streams with is the terminal -coalgebra. The unique homomorphism from sends to the stream .
Non-example: the map with is not a homomorphism from to itself. Indeed , while .
