Følner condition
Builds on Group
Definition
Let be a group, and for a subset and let . The group satisfies the Følner condition if the following holds. For every finite set and every , there is a finite nonempty set with where is the symmetric difference. For a countable group, a Følner sequence is a sequence of finite nonempty subsets with for every .
Remarks
Example: with . For with , the sets and differ in points, so . So is a Følner sequence.
Non-example: the free group on two generators fails the condition. Every finite nonempty has some generator with at least a fixed positive fraction of . This reflects that is not amenable.
Følner's theorem says that a discrete group satisfies the Følner condition exactly when it is amenable. For a locally compact group, one uses compact sets of positive Haar measure and compact sets instead.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
