F-plane
Summary
The f-plane is the simplest model of a rotating planet: a flat plane in which the Coriolis parameter is a constant. It approximates a small patch of the planet near a fixed latitude. It captures rotation effects such as geostrophic balance, inertial oscillations and Kelvin waves, but not the variation of with latitude.
