Beta plane

Definition

Let a planet of radius aa rotate with angular speed Ω\Omega, and fix a reference latitude φ0\varphi_0. Use local Cartesian coordinates xx (east) and yy (north, the distance from latitude φ0\varphi_0). The beta plane at φ0\varphi_0 is the model in which the equations of motion are written in these flat coordinates. In it the Coriolis parameter is f=f0+βy,f0=2Ωsin⁡φ0,β=2Ωcos⁡φ0a.f = f_0 + \beta y, \qquad f_0 = 2 \Omega \sin \varphi_0, \qquad \beta = \frac{2 \Omega \cos \varphi_0}{a}.

Remarks

The formula is the first-order Taylor expansion of f=2Ωsin⁡φf = 2 \Omega \sin \varphi in y=a(φ−φ0)y = a (\varphi - \varphi_0), so it is accurate when ∣βy∣≪∣f0∣\abs{\beta y} \ll \abs{f_0}. The case β=0\beta = 0 is the f-plane. At φ0=0\varphi_0 = 0 one gets the equatorial beta plane f=βyf = \beta y with β=2Ω/a\beta = 2 \Omega / a.

Example: for the Earth, Ω=7.292×10−5\Omega = 7.292 \times 10^{-5} s−1^{-1} and a=6.371×106a = 6.371 \times 10^6 m. At φ0=45∘\varphi_0 = 45^\circ this gives f0≈1.03×10−4f_0 \approx 1.03 \times 10^{-4} s−1^{-1} and β≈1.62×10−11\beta \approx 1.62 \times 10^{-11} m−1^{-1} s−1^{-1}.

Non-example: keeping f=2Ωsin⁡(φ0+y/a)f = 2 \Omega \sin(\varphi_0 + y / a) exactly in flat coordinates is not a beta plane, since ff is not linear in yy. Such models lack the simple constant-coefficient wave solutions of the beta plane.

The beta-plane equations use flat geometry and drop all other curvature terms. This is consistent only at leading order in L/aL / a, where LL is the scale of the motion.
