Functions of a complex variable Series expansions Concept

Faber polynomials

Summary

The Faber polynomials of a compact set KK in the plane are polynomials F0,F1,F2,…F_0, F_1, F_2, \dots, with FnF_n of degree nn. They are built from the conformal map of the complement of KK onto the exterior of the unit disc. They play for KK the role that the powers znz^n play for a disc. Functions holomorphic on a neighbourhood of KK can be expanded in Faber series ∑nbnFn(z)\sum_n b_n F_n(z). They are a standard tool of polynomial approximation and of geometric function theory.
