Fabry–Pérot interferometer
Builds on Optical path lengthRefractive index
Example
A Fabry–Pérot interferometer is a pair of parallel, partially reflecting mirrors at distance , with a medium of refractive index between them. Assume the mirrors are lossless, with intensity reflectance and transmittance . Light of vacuum wavelength crosses the gap at angle to the normal. Let be the phase delay of one round trip, from the optical path length. The transmitted intensity, as a fraction of the incident one, is
Check: the transmitted wave is the sum of the beams that bounce back and forth times. Each round trip multiplies the amplitude by , and the two passes through the mirrors give the factor . The geometric series gives the amplitude . Its squared modulus is , which equals .
So exactly when , that is when for an integer : all the beams interfere constructively. Between these peaks drops to , which is small when is close to . At normal incidence the peaks are spaced in frequency by the free spectral range , where is the speed of light in vacuum. The ratio of this spacing to the width of a peak at half height is the finesse, approximately when is close to .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
