Convex and discrete geometry Example
Face lattice
Example
Let be a convex polytope, that is, the convex hull of finitely many points. A face of is itself, the empty set, or a set for a supporting hyperplane . Here is supporting when lies in one closed half-space bounded by . The face lattice of is the set of all faces of , ordered by inclusion. It is a lattice: the meet of two faces is their intersection, and the join is the smallest face that contains both. It is graded by , with the empty face of rank and of rank . It is an Eulerian poset.
Check for a square . The faces are the empty face, vertices, edges and itself, so the lattice has elements. Two vertices have the empty face as meet; two adjacent vertices have their common edge as join, and two opposite vertices have as join. In the interval from the empty face to , the elements of even rank are the empty face and the edges. The elements of odd rank are the vertices and . There are five of each, as the Eulerian condition asks.
Remarks
The face lattice records the combinatorial type of the polytope: two polytopes are combinatorially equivalent exactly when their face lattices are isomorphic. The face lattice of a -simplex is the lattice of all subsets of its vertices. Abstract polytopes are defined by taking some properties of face lattices as axioms.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
